Key Largo Man Allegedly Beats And Abandons Dog

FLORIDA KEYS (CBSMiami) - A Key Largo man has been arrested for allegedly torturing his dog.

Police said Todd Alexander, 36, beat his eight-year-old pit bull named Diamond with a metal pipe sometime between July 19th and the 21st.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, a witness close to Alexander told them he was going to "get rid" of the dog. Deputies also said the witness told them that Alexander used duct tape to tape the dog's mouth and nose, and left the dog without food and water for two days.

After the two days, Alexander allegedly returned to beat the dog with a metal pipe. While she was still alive, Alexander reportedly put her in a black garbage bag and dumped her alongside Gun Club Road in Key Largo.

A passerby spotted the black bag with something moving inside. When he cut the bag open, he found the suffering dog, still alive.

Animal Control officers responded and took Diamond to the shelter. They treated the suffering dog, but her injuries were too severe and had to be euthanized.

Alexander was charged with cruelty to animals and use of a weapon during the commission of a felony.
