Miami-Dade Aviation Dept. To Pay Tribute On 9/11
MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Thursday is the 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the Miami-Dade Aviation Department will take time to pause and pay tribute.
Thursday morning, the 13th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, the department will pay tribute to the nearly 3,000 innocent civilians, first responders and airline employees who died in the 2001 attacks.
There's a remembrance ceremony Thursday morning at MIA's Flag of Honor installation, located adjacent to Gate D25 in the North Terminal. The memorial lists the names of all who perished in the terrorist attacks 13 years ago.
Representatives of MDAD, the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Aviation Division, the Miami-Dade Airport District Police and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Honor Guard will gather at 8:35 a.m. to observe a moment of silence, present colors and lay a memorial wreath at the foot of the Flag of Honor. Additionally, an MDAD employee will play bagpipe renditions of "Amazing Grace" and "God Bless America" for all assembled.
SHANKSVILLE
In Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed, there are events taking place at the Flight 93 National Memorial including the first public display of the Congressional Gold Medal that will be presented by U.S. House and Senate leaders in a private ceremony at the U.S. Capitol on Sept. 10. Medals also will be presented to the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York, and one to the Pentagon Memorial at the Pentagon.
Medals were struck for each of the 9/11 sites to honor those who died in the terrorist attacks. The Congressional Gold Medal, according to the National Park Service, is the highest civilian award the U.S. Congress can bestow.
The medal will be presented during the 9/11 ceremony and will remain on display through Sept. 14. It will not be displayed again until the completion of the Flight 93 National Memorial Visitor Center in 2015.
NEW YORK
In New York, a memorial ceremony for families of the victims at the World Trade Center will be held at the 9/11 Memorial.
A Tribute in Light will begin at 6 p.m. Sept. 11. The blue twin beams are visible within a 60-mile radius on a clear night.
WASHINGTON, D.C.
The Pentagon Memorial commemorates the 184 people who died in the Pentagon and on American Airlines Flight 77 during the terrorist attacks. Special services will be held on Sept. 11 for the families of the victims.
