Police said the men took some personal items and then shot the man several times before fleeing the area.

A police spokesperson said the correctional officer may have been targeted because he is with law enforcement.

"That comes with the profession in the sense that people know," said Miami-Dade Police Spokesman Detective Alvaro Zabaleta. "They see you in uniform. That's why you always have to be on your toes."

He was shot and is undergoing surgery at Kendall Regional Hospital.

Police are not identifying the officer, except to say he is about 50-years-old.  He has been with the Miami-Dade department for 28-years, officials said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
