Pastor Shot & Killed Outside Of Market

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A South Florida pastor was shot and killed during a robbery in front of a Liberty City market Thursday evening.

Family says Pastor Kenneth Johnson, 67, of Power Faith and Deliverance Ministries was fatally wounded after two young men tried to snatch a fake gold chain from his neck.

"It hurts," the pastor's wife Latoya Johnson told CBS4's Gaby Fleischman. "Why would they do that? Why would they take his life? Just take the chain and don't hurt him."

According to Miami police, the shooting happened at the City Market on 62nd Street and Northwest 13th Avenue. Johnson was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital's trauma center where he later died.

Two young men are being questioned by detectives, but no arrests have been made.

Fellow clergy members remember Pastor Johnson a genuine and giving man. They say he spent much of his time trying to help rehabilitate ex-convicts and drug addicts in Liberty City.

"He was a very faithful man, he worked very diligently to help others. That's why it's so sad," said Minister George Ellis.

Those shaken by the loss hope it will send a message to the community.

"He is a type of martyr," said Pastor Vinson Spann. "I think this death will shake up this area, will turn up the fire power, the police department, and I believe the people will come together. Justice shall be done."
