Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue: Woman Gives Birth On I-595

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue says a woman gave birth to a healthy baby girl while riding in a car with her husband on Thursday afternoon around 6:30 pm.

The woman, whose name is not being released due to privacy laws, was calm and holding the baby when paramedics arrived, officials said.

"She walked (her husband) through it because she's a NICU nurse," said paramedic David Porter. "He caught the baby."

Fire Rescue officials say the woman was heading to a birthing center in Hollywood when the baby decided it was time to make an appearance. Even though the child was already born when paramedics arrived, they played a crucial role in making sure the baby was safe and healthy. They also transported the mother and child to Broward General Medical Center.

"We wipe down the baby, stimulate the baby, provide a little oxygen," said paramedic Rolando Busto. "Mom was in great spirits. Baby was in great health."

Paramedics say both mom and baby are doing well. They were happy to be a part of a joyful occasion.

"These are the better calls," said Busto. "You deal with tragedy day in and day out it/s nice when you get a call like this."

"It's great," said Porter. "This is what we live to do. This is a great experience. A new birth. A new life."
