WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Florida State’s Mike Martin became the third baseball coach in Division I history to reach 1,800 wins, earning the milestone with the Seminoles’ 4-3 victory over Wake Forest in 13 innings Saturday night.

Martin, in his 35th year as Florida State’s coach, joined Texas coach Augie Garrido and former Wichita State coach Gene Stephenson as the only men in Division I to reach the mark.

“I think really one day I will look back on this, but right now it’s just a number,” Martin said. “And I don’t want it to sound like it’s not important. It is important because we won a ballgame. But what’s important to me is seeing those young men get to the (College World Series). That’s what excites me more than anything about this job. I want to see those young men get to Omaha.”

Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jameis Winston (1-0) pitched a career-high 4 2-3 shutout innings for the win. The Seminoles closer allowed two hits and walked one while striking out two on 44 pitches.

“He gave us a chance,” Martin said of Winston. “We kept waiting for the big hit and got it on a Texas Leaguer (in the 13th). It was a great win for us.”

Danny De La Calle’s RBI single — a flare into short left-center that Grant Shambley made a diving attempt on — in the 13th scored John Sansone from second for the go-ahead run. It give the Seminoles (30-8) their fourth straight series victory over the Demon Deacons (24-17).

Reliever Garrett Kelly (1-1) took the loss for Wake Forest.
