Medicaid Enrollment On The Rise In Florida

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — Florida's Medicaid rolls are expanding under the Affordable Care Act.

While the state's Republican lawmakers remain staunchly opposed to expanding Medicaid, an additional 245,000 Floridians signed up for it on top of the previous average monthly enrollments between October and the end of February during the enrollment period under Obama's new law.

Health advocacy group Florida CHAIN says Florida's newest enrollees include more than 51,000 children and more than 32,000 parents.

According to Avalere Health, the Sunshine State is one of 10 states that accounted for more than 80 percent of the 3 million new Medicaid enrollees under the Affordable Care Act. But Florida was the only one that didn't expand Medicaid.
