Two Dead In Little Haiti Drive By Shooting

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Two people are dead after a drive-by shooting in Little Haiti early Wednesday morning.

Miami Police said a man and woman in their early twenties were gunned down just before 2:00 a.m. at 151 NE 63rd Street.

According to detectives, Marquis Sams, 20, was sitting in the driver's side of a white Chevy Cavalier and 19-year old Wilneka Pennyman was standing outside when someone opened fire from a car that sped off.

Neighbor Wood Joseph, 12, woke up to the sound of gunshots fired outside of his home.

"Boom, boom, boom, very loud, "said Joseph.

Sams died in the car.  Pennyman, who was also shot multiple times, ran to a house where she collapsed. She was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital where she died.

"We don't know if indeed the person behind the wheel was the actual target but caught in the crossfire was a woman also in her 20s. She ran for her life but later collapsed in front of this home," said Kenia Reyes with the Miami Police Department.

As crime scene investigators gathered evidence, neighbors stayed inside their homes terrified by what had happened.

"I was shaking scared because I thought the bullet was going to go through my window. I thought I was gonna be shot,"said neighbor Guerlin Joseph.

Detectives believe Sams  was targeted and Pennyman may have been caught in the crossfire. The motive for the shooting and how many people were involved is still unclear.

"These type of situations need to stop and we definitely need the community's help with information," said Reyes.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
