Cooper City Residents Can Get Fido Microchipped For Free

FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – In an effort to get Fido or Fluffy back home as quickly as possible in Cooper City, this weekend there will be a free pet chipping event.

The Broward Sheriff's Office has teamed up with the Rock Creek Animal Hospital to offer free microchips for anyone in the city who has a pet dog or cat. On Saturday, March 29th, veterinarians will implant the microchips from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the BSO's district office in Cooper City at 10580 Stirling Road.

The microchips contain information to identify dogs or cats and their owners in the event that the pets are found away from home. The information on each animal with a microchip is registered in a database.

In 2013, sheriff's deputies in Cooper City responded to 167 animal calls, many of which involved unidentified pets. Deputies and BSO community service aides typically have to go door to door to find a lost animal's owner.

All participants must register in advance for the event by calling (954) 432-9000 ext. 249. Only dogs and cats will be chipped. Two pets per household will be allowed.
