Man Wanted For Stabbing On UF Campus Shot By Police

GAINESVILLE (CBSMiami) - A man wanted in connection with a stabbing on the campus of the University of Florida on Monday was killed in a police involved shooting.

Gainesville police said around 7 a.m., Michael Cravey, 28, stabbed a man in Leigh Hall and then took off in a Jeep. Police have not given a motive for the stabbing or the condition of the injured man.

Shortly after 10am, Cravey was spotted by a Gainesville officer in the parking lot of the Best Buy on SW Archer Road.

When the officer ordered Cravey to drop a hatchet that he had in his hand, he reportedly ignored the command and moved toward the officer. The officer fired on Cravey, striking him several times.

"Today, our officer had to make a decision that saved his own life, and possibly others against a suspect that had already hurt another person," said police spokesman Ben Tobias.

Cravey was taken to UF Health/Shands where he died.
