MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — According to new statistics, students in Florida high schools are healthier than they were six years ago.

State health officials surveyed 6,089 students in 73 high schools and found the number of students who drank soda one or more times daily dropped from 31 percent in 2007 to 22 percent in 2013.

At the same time, the number of students who exercised for an hour during five of the past seven days increased from 38 to nearly 44 percent. And the number of students who watched three or more hours of TV on an average school day went from 40 percent to 31 percent.

The Florida Department of Health and the Florida Department of Education are working to create school environments that help students make healthier choices, such as drinking more water and staying active.
