MDPD Officers Encounter Gunfire

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Miami-Dade Police officers working in a neighborhood Friday afternoon encountered gunfire.

The scene unfolded at 43rd Street and NW 23rd Avenue.

According to Detective Elena Hernandez,  MDPD's narcotics unit was operating in the Brownsville area when the someone started firing about 4:50 p.m.

"Narcotic units were conducting an investigation in a known high drug area when they were seen by three subjects.  One of the subjects opened fire on officers. One of the officers was able to return fire as well," said Hernandez.

No one was hurt, but after the exchange of gunfire, police filled the streets.  Neighbors say the men who confronted the officers ran and barricaded themselves inside a home.

On the ground, officers surrounded the neighborhood.  Yellow tape blocked streets, and neighbors gathered to watch everything unfold.

Within a couple of hours it was all over police say two men were taken into custody and one was detained for questioning.

"One of the subjects that is in custody has been identified as the shooter and a gun was recovered from one of the subjects," said Hernandez.

Police have not released the names of the people they took into custody.  They said all are men in their early 20s.
