Gov. Scott Proposes Transportation Hub Spending
ORLANDO (CBSMiami/AP) — Gov. Rick Scott proposed spending more than $213 million for a transportation hub at the Orlando International Airport that would create jobs and a new rail line.
The governor said at a Monday news conference that the project, called the South Airport People Mover Complex, would create 1,900 construction jobs and 380 permanent jobs at the new facility. The $213.5 million would be spent over three years, provided the state Legislature also approves the spending plan.
"This project in Orlando, as well as others statewide, makes Florida's airports among the best in the nation, keeping Florida competitive, and creating jobs and opportunities for future generations," Scott said.
A key part of the project would use the new hub to link the Orlando airport with the private All Aboard Florida rail line that will run from South Florida to central Florida. It is expected to begin service as early as late 2015.
The transportation hub will also provide links to air and ground transportation, including rental cars, taxis, buses and private vehicles, according to the governor's office.
"The South Terminal Expansion will position Orlando International Airport to be among the first international airports in the U.S. to have air travel, ground transportation and rail — all in one location," said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.
The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority is providing $467.5 million for the project, which includes an Intermodal Transit facility.
