MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A Miami Gardens officer was hospitalized after he was shot during a foot chase.

Around 10 p.m. Saturday, officers were sent to an apartment building at 2170 NW 183rd Street to check out reports of a disturbance.

When they arrived, they saw several people involved in an altercation on the second floor of the building. As officers moved in, the people scattered.

One of those on the run, identified as 44-year old Randy Thomas, reportedly pulled a gun and fired on the officers, hitting one. Police fired back and shot Thomas.

The injured officer was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center where he was said to be stable. Thomas was also transported to Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.

Thomas will be charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
