Police Collect 79 Firearms At Holiday Gun Buy Back

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – In an effort to reduce gun violence and unnecessary injuries during the holiday season, Mayor Tomas Regalado and the Miami Police Department hosted this year's Holiday Gun Buy Back Operation Saturday.

The group collected 79 firearms at Saturday's event.

Members of the community were invited too drop off any firearm—no questions asked—from 10 AM to 2 PM at Jordan Grove Baptist Church at 5946 NW 12 Avenue.

In exchange for the gun, a gift certificate was provided by sponsors and partners of the event.

"It is necessary to try to remove as many illegal, unwanted, and unattended guns as possible from our streets to ensure our citizens' safety," stated Mayor Regalado in a press release. "

In a stand against gun violence, 9-year-old Dontrell Darling, who was wounded by a bullet when his home was riddled with bullets back in November, attended the event.
