Postal Service Offering Robbery Reward

HOMESTEAD (CBSMiami) – A hefty reward is being offered by the postal service for information on the person who robbed one of the carriers.

It happened Tuesday, Dec. 10th, around 2:30 p.m. at NE 10th Street and NE 2nd Avenue in Homestead. Postal investigators said a man ran up behind a letter carrier and snatched the master key.

"This is a financial crime, but unfortunately it started off with a violent crime," said postal inspector Blad Rojo.

Residents in the area were concerned with the access the thief now has to mailboxes.

"This is my neighborhood. I grew up here. I've never experienced anything like this before," said Antonio Gineera.

Postal inspectors believe the thief was likely after personal information in the theft.

"Just like with any identity theft, you know, your personal information, your identifiers, your bank records, any bank information is what the thieves want so that they can go ahead and capitalize that," Rojo said.

Rojo said the public should be proactive and run their credit reports and keep an eye on their credit.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction.

Anyone with information about the robbery should contact the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455 (select Option 2) or 954-436-7200. Ask for Postal Inspector Torres.
