MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Hialeah police have charged the former employees of a city day care center with Grand Theft.

Yanet Ortiz, 44, was the Director of the William Lehman Day Care Center, located at 7605 W. 10 Avenue, Hialeah; Sherry Correa, 43, was the Assistant Director.

An investigation by the police and the Hialeah Housing Authority revealed that the pair allegedly stole a little more than $78, 000 in cash from April, 2012 to June, 2013.

The money was taken from cash payments made for daycare services, which were deliberately entered into record incorrectly, to conceal the missing funds, according to police.

Investigators said their time at the center and their positions allowed them to steal the without being detected.

As soon as discrepancies were discovered by HHA administration, they notified the police.

Both Ortiz and Correa resigned on August 30th, 2013.

Hialeah Housing Authority Director, Julio Ponce, has ordered the payment receipt system completely overhauled and enhanced to prevent this type of thing from happening again.
