Praise, Criticism Leveled At Common Core During Davie Hearing

DAVIE (CBSMiami/AP) — More than 100 elected officials, teachers and concerned parents attended a public hearing in Davie Wednesday to debate the pros and cons of state's new academic standards.

The Common Core State Standards are in the process of being implemented in Florida. They also have been adopted by 44 other states and the District of Columbia.

The standards were developed by a coalition of state leaders and establish what students should know from one grade to the next. They're designed to ensure all students are college-ready by the time they graduate.

Gov. Rick Scott has called for three hearings on the standards amid outcry from Tea Party Republicans who say the standards represent a federal intrusion.

The first hearing was held in Tampa. The third will take place Thursday in Tallahassee.
