KISSIMMEE (AP/CBSMiami) — A Central Florida teacher has been jailed for sending inappropriate pictures of himself to a 16-year-old student.
Wayne Anthony Brown, 34, was being held Saturday on $5,000 bond, according to the Osceola County Jail records. He’s charged with distribution of obscene material to a minor, according to police.
Kissimmee police said in a statement released Friday that the investigation began in September when Brown’s wife told another employee at Mavericks High School that he had received explicit photos from a 16-year-old student. Detectives interviewed Brown, who denied receiving photos from the student.
Detectives interviewed the 16-year-old female student who stated over the course of the past year her relationship with Brown became increasingly more intimate, police said. She told detectives the two had sent explicit photos of themselves to each other, but that the relationship had not become physical.
Detectives met on Thursday with Brown, who cooperated with the investigation. An arrest warrant was obtained for Brown on Friday, charging him with distribution of obscene material to a Minor. Brown turned himself in at the Kissimmee Police Department and was transported to the Osceola County Jail.
“Detectives believe that Brown has victimized others as he has contact with children through the school and his church where he is a minister,” police said in a statement.
Students and parents said they were surprised to hear of the arrest.
“I’m really shocked because he’s a nice, nice man,” parent Helena Small told WFTV.
Student Joshua Rivera said Brown was friendly and helped out his students.
“Everybody didn’t expect that from Mr. Brown, especially not Mr. Brown,” Rivera said.
