Broward Cracks Down On Pet Breeders

FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – In an effort to reduce down on the county's dog and cat populations, Broward commissioners have passed new restrictions for breeders.

Pet breeders will now be required to purchase a permit, maintain records of the animals born and sold and submit to inspections, according to the Sun-Sentinel. They will also have to submit the names of people who bought animals from them to the county.

They will also only be allowed one litter per year per animal.

Any breeder cited for abuse in the past will not be allowed to breed animals in Broward.

County staff estimated they'll sell 50 to 75 permits and will investigate sellers who use sites like Craigslist or online classifieds.

The new law is meant to bolster the county's intention to reduce the number of animals euthanized each year at its shelter. The hope is that will cut down on overall population of pets and reduce the number that would end up roaming the streets as strays.
