MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A South Florida driver is in police custody for a car accident that killed a pedestrian near the Miami Dade College medical campus Thursday evening.

The accident took place at about 7:20 p.m. when police say Carlos Padron struck a man, believed to be in his 40s, at the intersection of Northwest Seventh Avenue and Northwest 20th Street in Miami. After Padrom hit the pedestrian, polices said he crashed into a concrete pole, right next to a bus stop.

Padron stayed on the scene but police said he failed the roadside sobriety test. He’s been charged with DUI manslaughter.

Police and a witness said a doctor on the scene and other good Samaritans tried to save the pedestrian’s life. They performed CPR before emergency crews arrived.

“I was just trying to do whatever I could. You hear stories about people just watching and there were like seven other people just standing there by the bus stop. I did what I could to help. Ten minutes later, an ambulance came and took care of him from there but I guess he died at the hospital,” said witness Vincent Quinn.

Miami Fire Rescue workers transported the victim to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital where he did die.

Homicide investigators are looking for the doctor who also tried to save the man’s life.

“There was a doctor on the scene that attempted to the save the pedestrian’s life. He did an outstanding job but he has information that I need. If he can come forward and contact the Miami Police Traffic Homicide Unit as well as any other person or witness that might have seen the crash, please come forward,” said Sgt. Luis Tabora of the Miami Police Department.
