Deputies Warn Of S. FL Car Crash Scam

BOCA RATON (CBSMiami) — If you get a phone call telling you a family member has been in a car crash and to send money, you should consider that it could be a scam.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputies put out a warning about the possible scam going around Boca Raton.

Thursday, a woman told deputies she was contacted by phone and told that her father was involved in a crash.  The caller reportedly went on to say the man was bleeding and the caller needed to send $2,000 for damages to the car.

According to the woman who contacted deputies, she did not know the caller.

The person on the phone claiming to be the victim even knew the type of car the potential victim's father drove.

The caller asked to meet the woman at the West Boca Medical Center.

If you receive a phone call similar to the one described, you should contact authorities and report it.
