Lauderdale Woman Fights Off Would-Be Robber

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – A woman fought off a man who tried to steal her gold necklace, the whole incident was caught on camera.

Now Ft. Lauderdale police are hoping someone recognizes the guy and gives them a call.

It happened last Monday in the parking lot of an apartment complex at 3815 SW 16th Street around 10:30 a.m.

Ibel Reyes, 31, said she was walking back to her apartment after doing her laundry next door when a man walked up behind her and tried to snatch the chain from around her neck.

On the surveillance video, Reyes can be seen trying to protect her necklace while fighting back.

Police say another person in the parking lot started to yell at the man and walked off. Reyes ended up with several scratches around her neck. The fact that he was so bold has police concerned.

"It's unknown if the suspect is going to become more violent or why he was so brazen. It's in the middle of the day, it's in a highly populated area and he probably had no idea he was caught on a nearby surveillance camera," said police spokeswoman Detective Deanna Greenlaw.

The man was described as being in his 20's, approximately 6'0" in height, thin build and wearing a blue t-shirt and jeans. He also had long dreadlocks secured in a bun on top of his head.

Anyone with information is urged to call Detective Orlando Almanzar at (954) 828-5546.
