Family Of Man Killed In Hit & Run Looking For Answers

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The family of a man who died early Tuesday morning in a hit and run crash in southwest Miami-Dade is devastated by the loss.

The accident happened just after midnight at SW 40th Street/Bird Road and SW 97th Avenue.

Carlos Pildain, 67, and his wife Dixiana were heading westbound on Bird Road when their Toyota Yaris was struck from behind in the intersection by a silver Cadillac Escalade traveling at a high rate of speed. On impact the car shot across the sidewalk and slammed into a light pole.

Pildain died on the scene. His wife was taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center in serious condition.

Visiting his mother at the hospital on Wednesday, the couple's son spoke of his loss.

"I can't stop thinking about him. I can't sleep because all I do is think about him," said Ramses Herrera. "He really did live for everybody else. He'd help anyone without expecting anything back. He worked tirelessly and was loved by everyone who knew him.

The Florida Highway Patrol found the Escalade blocks from the scene of the accident. While they've identified its owner, they don't know who was behind the wheel at the time of the crash.

"There is no excuse for what they did. They just left them there to die. They didn't care at all for him. Nobody deserves that. He was a wonderful man and didn't deserve to die like that," said Herrera.

Herrera said he would like the driver to do the right thing and turn themselves in to the authorities.
