Golf Course Worker Honored For Her Honesty

MIAMI (CBS4) – The City of Miami Beach has honored a golf course employee who found a bag full of money and turned it in.

Rachel Castillo drives the beverage cart at the Miami Beach Golf Course. Recently, she spotted a bag on a bench. When she looked inside, she found $36,000 in cash.

Castillo called the police who eventually tracked down the bag's owner. Seems it belonged to an elderly man who carried his life savings around with him.

The bag's owner didn't offer to give Castillo a reward for finding his bag and doing the right thing, so the city's commission decided to honor her honesty and actions by giving her city-wide recognition with a proclamation.

"I know it's hard to believe but really I never had a thought to keep it. I just wanted to turn it in and do the right thing," said Castillo.

Castillo admits she was hopeful the 90 day investigation period would have ended without the police finding the bag's owner. If it had, she would have been able to keep the money.

During Wednesday's ceremony, city commissioners said Castillo has been an inspiration to the community.
