Barricaded Man Taken Into Police Custody

MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) – Miami Beach police and members of a SWAT team surrounded an apartment early Thursday after a man armed with a gun barricaded himself inside.

Around 1 a.m. a man, who was under the influence of narcotics, was at home with his wife in the residence at Normandy Drive and 71st Street, according to police spokeswoman Vivian Hernandez.

The man reportedly began to hallucinate and thought someone was trying to break in. He then grabbed a gun and fired several shots outside to scare away people he thought were coming to rob him, said Hernandez.

As the man began to barricade himself inside the apartment, his wife managed to get out.

Just after 9 a.m., the man was taken into custody. He was then taken to a hospital for observation.

Police have blocked off Normandy Drive just East of Bay Drive West to traffic until they can resolved the situation.
