MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A 30-year-old Miami man was arrested late Wednesday night after a homeless man was beaten with a cane outside a gas station.

According to Miami Police, Yoandri Alba was arrested on the 900 block of West Flagler St. after a homeless man was beaten. A witness to the beating told police that he had seen Alba walk up to a gas station and start engaging in conversation with homeless person who had been sitting outside the station.

The witness said he couldn’t hear what was said but that at a certain point, a man fitting Alba’s description grabbed the homeless person’s walking cane and began to hit them with it repeatedly, according to the police report.

Miami Police said the homeless person tried to shield themselves from the attack but eventually fell down on the ground. The witness told police the beating continued until the cane broke and then the attacker, who police believe was Alba, began to kick the homeless person in the back, chest, and head.

According to police, Alba described what led to the beating. “The guy was talking and saying things to me in English I didn’t understand. He went to get up and I grabbed his cane and hit him a few times with it.”

Police said the witness also picked Alba out of a lineup after he was arrested.

The victim of the beating was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
