Miami’s Big Orange Set For Test Run Ahead Of New Year’s Eve

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Dozens of people are putting the final touches on Miami’s Big Orange/La Gran Naranja ahead of its annual ascent to mark the beginning of a new year.

Workers are set to test the Big Orange on its downtown site on the side of the Hotel InterContinental Miami at 6 p.m. Friday.

The annual ascent of the Orange has a new theme for this year celebrating Florida as “The Orange State.”

The Big Orange was renamed La Gran Naranja through 2013 and the state will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Spanish bringing the orange to Florida in 1513.

The actual raising of the Orange will happen New Year’s Eve and culminate at midnight on January 1, 2013.
