TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) — Gov. Rick Scott, one of the oldest governor’s in Florida history, turns 60 Saturday.
Aside from former Gov. Lawton Chiles, who was elected at 60, Scott is the oldest governor to be elected since Henry Laurens Mitchell in the late 19th century. Mitchell, who was Florida’s 16th governor, left office in 1897 at age 65. Chiles was 68 when he died at the end of his second term in 1998.
Buddy MacKay, who served the final three weeks of Chiles’ term was 65 as was Wayne Mixson, who served three days as governor in 1987 to allow Bob Graham to start his U.S. Senate career early for seniority purposes.
Graham, Jeb Bush, Reubin Askew and LeRoy Collins all turned 50 while governor.
