Burst Pipe Floods FIU Dorm

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – It was a soggy start for some Florida International University students after a water pipe burst in their dorm.

Just before dawn Wednesday, students living in the student housing residence at 11040 SW 14th Street were awakened by the building's alarm. School officials said a sprinkler system water pipe on the sixth floor burst.

The gushing water leaked all the way down to the first floor with an inch or more of water collecting in some spots.

The 40 or so residents of the dorm were evacuated. Freshman Rohan Jani said he scrambled to get as much as he could in his backpack before he left.

"Everything. Whatever school books I had, my pillow just in case something happened," said Jani.

Several of the dorm's room received water damage.

Most students should be able to return to their rooms by Wednesday evening.
