Miami Broward Carnival Immerses Revelers In Island Life

LAUDERHILL (CBSMiami) — This weekend, the Miami Broward Carnival is treating revelers and music-lovers to the lively spirit of the Caribbean.

In its fourth year, the Carnival features Calypso, Soca and island vibes, all easily felt throughout the colorful parades, costumes, theme parties and (of course) the music. There's plenty of interesting food to taste, too. Bring your patience, though: this year's carnival is expected to attract over 200,000 revelers from across the world.

For just $20 (in advance), carnival attendees will be treated to Mas band pageantry from the Parade of Bands, international Soca superstars, and Red Bull's Culture Clash, during which groups of DJs battle with tunes from around the world.

Saturday features pre-Carnival events, including:

  • Jouvert, an outdoor day-break paint party. 7 a.m. inside Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill
  • Parade of Bands, featuring over 25 Mas bands dazzling and dancing down "DJ Road". 10 a.m.
  • Carnival Village, a live steel pan music celebration and competition. 3 p.m. at Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill

The Carnival kicks off Sunday with a tribute to the 50th anniversary of independence for Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago at 10 a.m. on Sun Life Stadium grounds.

Live performances will showcase the sounds of King of Soca Machel Montano & the HD Band, the legendary Byron Lee's Dragonaires, Patrice Roberts and Farmer Nappy.

The Carnival debut of Red Bull Culture Clash featuring Black Chiney, Beauty & The Beats, Soulfrito, and Uncle Luke All-stars will spin the hottest genres in the Miami music scene: reggae, chutney, house, dubstep, soca and calypso, Latin, and Miami bass.

Admission to Red Bull Music Academy Culture Clash is included in your ticket to Miami Broward Carnival.
