Sheriff's Office ID's Man Killed On Tracks

POMPANO BEACH (CBS4) – The Broward Sheriff's Office has released the name of the Pompano Beach man who was struck and killed by a train while trying to cross train tracks in Pompano Beach Saturday evening.

Investigators believe Matthew Sayers, 31, was either talking on a cell phone or looking at an iPod, and did not see the train when he crossed the tracks at NE 48th St. and N Dixie Highway.

Witnesses told detectives that Sayers appeared distracted as he walked into the path of the northbound Florida East Coast Railways cargo train. The train engineer saw him walking past the gate and blew the train's horn. It's unclear why Sayers didn't hear the train or notice the flashing lights.

By the time Sayers turned to see the train it was too late. Investigators believe it was an accident.
