Bomb Scare In Hollywood Park

HOLLYWOOD (CBSMiami) – There was a bomb scare early Thursday morning at a popular park in Hollywood.

Just before 9:30 a.m. the city sent out an email alert warning residents to avoid the area of Madison and Jefferson streets between 15th and 16th avenues near Jefferson Park.

Streets in the area have were closed to traffic as a precautionary measure and about 20 residents were evacuated.

Chopper4 over the park spotted what looked like cylindrical tubes wrapped in paper or tape laying near a tree.  Hollywood police called it a credible threat and requested a bomb squad from the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The bomb squad used a specialized robot equipped with cameras to get a close up view of the object.

After poking and prodding it, the robot lifted it into the air.  Around 10:40 a.m., a member of the bomb squad came over and took the object from the robot with his bare hands after determining it was not threat.

Police say it turned out to be a group of spent fireworks casings taped together.
