Tropical Storm Alberto formed off the Carolina coast Saturday, May 19, 2012. It is the first storm of the Atlantic Hurricane Season.
MIAMI (CBS4) – The first tropical storm of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season has formed off the coast of South Carolina with top winds of 45 mph (75 kph).
At 5 p.m. Saturday, National Hurricane Center forecasters say Tropical Storm Alberto was centered about 140 miles (225 km) off Charleston, S.C.
The storm is moving about 3 mph (6kph) to the southwest.
Forecasters predict some strengthening as it moves toward land.
As of 5 p.m. there are no watches or warnings in effect.
