Hit And Run Victim Attacks Good Samaritan Cops
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - It started as a hit and run accident, and turned into a bizarre Only-in-Miami experience, after a man who was struck by a taxi started attacking Good Samaritans who tried to come to his aid after the taxi driver fled.
It happened about 5:40 Saturday morning in the 1800 block of Bayshore Drive.
Miami police were called after the man, identified as Evan Oberfelder, was hit by a yellow cab that apparently had passengers. Calls to 911 brought officers, but by the time they arrived the cab was gone, and the victim was riled up.
Miami police spokesperson Kenia Reyes said several Miami officers tried to help Oberfelder, who was bloody and half naked. Reyes said Oberfelder argued with the officers, and started battling with them.
Cops had to subdue the accident victim, but in the process, 10 Miami officers were exposed to blood, which is a potentially dangerous situation.
Three of the officers were hurt badly enough that they were taken to Ryder Trauma Center for treatment, including one officer with a fractured arm, while 7 others were treated at the accident scene for blood exposure.
Once the victim was controlled he, too, was taken to the trauma center where his injuries were described as critical.
Oberfelder, 23, was arrested and charged with one count of felony battery, one count of false imprisonment, one count of aggravated battery on a police officer, one count of resisting arrest with violence and one count of criminal mischief.
He remains hospitalized at Jackson Memorial Hospital and in custody of Miami-Dade Corrections.
Police are hunting for the taxi driver, who fled the scene in what police were told was a medium-sized yellow cab. Police were also told there appeared to be passengers in the cab who might be able to provide details about the accident.
