"Water Test" Scammer Makes Off With Woman's Ring
TAMARAC (CBSMiami) – After a con artist made off with an elderly Tamarac woman's diamond ring, the Broward Sheriff's Office is urging everyone to 'Slam the Door on Scammers'.
According to the sheriff's office, a man posing as a 'water tester' knocked on the woman's door and said he had to take a sample of her water. The woman let him. After taking a sample of water from a faucet, the man reportedly told her that water was acidic as he 'accidentally' spilled some on her hands. He then told her she needed to take off her ring because the water would damage it.
She did.
The man then said he was going to his van to get tools to make the repair. Instead, he took the ring, without her realizing it, and took off.
BSO said it's never a good idea to let strangers into your home. Demand identification and then call the company to verify their identity. If you are unsure immediately call 911.
