BEVERLY HILLS (CBSMiami) – Actor and activist Sean Penn is taking on a new role — ambassador at large for Haiti.

Haiti’s government named Penn to the post at a fundraising party for Penn’s Haitian relief organization, J/P Haitian Relief Organization, over the weekend.

The party in Beverly Hills drew such stars as George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kim Kardashian and Mel Gibson.

The dinner, which was organized by Cinema for Peace, raised $5 million to put toward the efforts of rebuilding,

Penn has been helping with relief efforts since Haiti was ravaged by a massive earthquake two years ago.

More than 300-thousand people were killed in the disaster and more than 300-thousand others were hurt. Another 500-thousand are still living in temporary camps amid a cholera epidemic.
