Grenade Removed From SW Dade Neighborhood

KENDALL (CBS4) - A South Florida neighborhood looked more like a Hollywood movie set as special forces moved in to get a bomb and 92nd Avenue and SW 85 Street.

In the middle of a Kendall neighborhood, a member of the Miami-Dade Bomb Squad carefully carried some sort of military-grade, 40mm grenade and gently places it inside a bomb disposal truck.

"This is a very deadly weapon. Had this weapon activated, this could take out a vehicle," said Det. Roy Rutland of Miami-Dade Police.

Jean Viollis, 68,  found the grenade while raking the leaves in her backyard. Still a bit shaken, she spoke to reporters through her window.

"I was scared. I was scared," said Viollis.

And so were her neighbors.

"They told us it was a bomb," said neighbor Maria Chavez.

Viollis has a lot to worry about these days. She found the grenade within days of doctors telling her they found a tumor near a nerve, and just six months ago, her husband died of cancer. He was a former military man, so could the grenade have been his?

"Oh no! No way! No way in the world," said Viollis.

She says the grenade wasn't there when she raked the leaves a few days ago.

"All I know is that today, I went back there and I found it," she said.

Police now want to know where it came from.

"These types of weapons are deployed from a launcher," said Det. Rutland.

"To me it looked like a bullet. I've never seen anything like that in my life," said Viollis.

But Jean is glad that the grenade did not detonate.

"I bet my neighbors are too," she said with laughter.

The grenade is now at a secret location. The military will now investigate it.
