Brutal Beating At Ft. Lauderdale Condo Complex Caught On Camera

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - A brutal beating is caught on camera and Fort Lauderdale Police say they need the public's help to bring the attacker to justice.

The scene unfolded at the Villas at Lakeview condominium complex on NW 31 Avenue in the early morning hours of November 4th. Surveillance cameras captured the attack.

Homeowner's association president Arthur Burns is seen on video talking on his phone and standing near his bicycle when a trio of men walk into view.

One of the men circles behind Burns and seconds later sucker punches him in the side of the head. Burns fell to the ground unconscious.

"I never saw it coming," Burns, 61, told CBS 4's Carey Codd. "I was out for maybe 10 or 20 seconds."

As Burns lay on the ground, his attacker rifled through his pockets. When Burns tried to get up the attacker punched him again and again.

The bad guy kicked him, stole his iPhone and started to walk away.

Just as Burns was about to get up, the attacker leaped in the air and kicked him in the back of the head.

At that point, the beating was finally over.

"I really was scared," Burns said. "I know that I could have died that night."

Burns didn't break any bones or have any major cuts. He was just sore all over with a knot on his head.

He's angry that the guy who punched him didn't square him up to fight like a man.

"I'd have feel better if he'd have looked me in the face and busted me in the front and gave me a fighting chance," Burns said.

Burns said minutes before the attack began he told one of the other men that he was going to call the police because of a noise disturbance. Burns believes that led to the beating.

After Burns got hit no one came to his defense.

And even though he took a few rounds to his left cheek, Burns is ready to turn the other cheek for his attacker.

"I don't hold no grudges," Burns said. "If I saw that guy today I really don't know him but if he needed a hand I still would help him because that's the kind of guy I am."

Make no mistake, Burns wants this guy caught. He says the entire community should want him off the streets.

"The guy apparently has no heart or no conscience about how to treat a person," Burns said. "If you do that to a person already down and unconscious, you got to be cold blooded. Those kind of people don't need to be out here with us. They need to be locked up."

The Fort Lauderdale Police want Burns' attacker in handcuffs. If you can help them call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954 493 TIPS.
