Report: FAU Coaching Search Winding Down

MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – Florida Atlantic University's football team has lost every game it's played this year and is set to lose its legendary head coach after the team's final game on December 3rd.

Needless to say, the next coach will have quite the challenge ahead of him.

The school has only had one coach, Howard Schnellenberger, since the football team started play eleven seasons ago. Schnellenberger, 77, won't have much to do with the selection of his replacement, but there are some big names on the school's wish list.

According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, athletic director Craig Angelos has made contact with: former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach; University of North Alabama coach Terry Bowden; former Clemson coach Tommy Bowden; Florida State asst. coach Eddie Gran; and former North Carolina State head coach Chuck Amato.

Angelos told the Sun-Sentinel that he had spent the last few weeks making visits and is preparing to narrow down his wish list in the coming weeks.

The next head coach will take over a team that is ranked last in the Football Bowl Subdivision in scoring offense; 108th in scoring defense; and is at or near the bottom of nearly every major offensive and defensive category in college football.

Florida Atlantic plays UAB this weekend and will finish off the season on December 3rd against the University of Louisiana-Monroe.

FAU is currently 0-10 on the season. Both of the final games will be played at the new FAU stadium in Boca Raton.
