MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Marlins and CBS4’s Neighbors 4 Neighbors are getting into the holiday spirit by handing out more than 1,000 Thanksgiving meals to families in need.

Volunteers gave away the birds and all the fixings at the new Marlins Stadium in Miami. The meal package included a turkey, cranberry sauce, lemonade and fresh produce. The produce is locally grown from Farm Share, non-profit organization, food bank, soup kitchen, disaster relief, for recovery and distribution of surplus assistance food for hungry people in need.

The event was part of Neighbors 4 Neighbors Adopt A Family for the Holidays program, which partners generous donors with South Florida families who are struggling to make ends meet over the holiday season.

“As Opening Day at the New Ballpark approaches, the Miami Marlins together with our partners like Farm Share, continue to impact the community,” said Angela Smith, Director of Community Outreach for the Miami Marlins. “We take our neighborly responsibility very seriously and we intend to continue making a difference in the lives of South Floridians.”

Hall of Famer Andre Dawson said the event is a first for the new ballpark.

“This is the third year we’ve actually been at this site, but the Marlins have done this for 10 years now,” he said. “We have two more giveaways at Broward County, two smaller one… but this is the big one of the year here at the new stadium site.”

Dawson added, “It’s amazing. We’re trying to really build up a relationship with the community and there is a lot of food.”

The packages can feed a family of eight, Dawson said.
