Mom Helped Cop Son Flee Country To Escape Drug Charges

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami/AP) - A Coral Springs woman has admitted to helping her police officer son escape to Brazil in order to avoid federal drug charges.

On Monday, 51-year old Janiber Vieira pleaded guilty to conspiracy in helping former Boynton Beach officer David Britto flee the country. The maximum potential sentence is five years behind bars.

Sentencing is set for November.

Britto cut off an electronic ankle monitor and flew to Brazil with his mother's help before his trial was to begin last month. Britto has pleaded not guilty to involvement in methamphetamine trafficking.

A former Marine, Britto was Boynton Beach's officer of the year in 2010.
