Katia Races Away From U.S., No Longer A Hurricane

MIAMI (CBS4) – The remnants of Hurricane Katia are racing away from the US at highway speeds, and and as of 11 a.m. Saturday, it was no longer a tropical system, just a nasty storm headed toward Europe.

At 11 a.m. the center of the storm was about 1060 miles east west-southwest of Glasgow, Scotland. It was moving to the north at 53 mph.

Maximum sustained winds were 80 mph, but it is no longer consider a tropical system, and is not a hurricane. However, it is expected to possibly bring rain and high winds to the British Isles.

Large swells generated by Katia will continue to affect most of the eastern seaboard of the U.S., Bermuda and the east facing beaches of the Bahamas for the next couple of days. These swells are likely to cause life threatening surf and rip currents.

CBSMiami will end updates on Katia with this report.
