Hurricane Katia Gains More Speed, Moves Away From U.S.Coast

MIAMI (CBS4) – Hurricane Katia continued to gain speed Friday it moved over the open Atlantic between Bermuda and Nova Scotia.

At 11:00 a.m., Katia was centered about 485 miles north of Bermuda and was moving northeast near 29 mph.

Maximum sustained winds were 85 mph. Hurricane force winds extend 50 miles from Katia's center; tropical storm force winds extend outward 255 miles. Some weakening is expected within the next 48 hours as Katia moves over cooler waters.

Despite not hitting land, the National Hurricane Center said large swells generated by the Category 1 storm will continue affecting the U.S. East Coast and Bermuda. These swells are likely to cause life threatening surf and rip currents.

You can get complete details on the storm, including up-to date maps and forecasts, at the CBSMiami Tropical Weather Center.
