Davie Officials May Cancel Red-Light Camera Contract

DAVIE (CBS4)- It could be lights out for red light cameras in Davie. That's because town leaders want a formal vote on cancelling the camera contract at next Wednesday's council meeting.

The town has a three-year contract with American Traffic Solutions Inc. of Kansas and planned to install 16 cameras and start issuing $158 fines to violators beginning on August 20th, according to the Sun Sentinel. But critics said Davie will not collect enough in fines to pay the $76,000 monthly bill to run the cameras.

In addition to Davie, American Traffic Solutions has contracts with six other cities in Broward County for red-light cameras: Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Hallandale Beach, Pembroke Pines, Sunrise and Margate, the Sentinel reported.

The red light camera company is not saying whether it will sue if Davie backs out of the contract.
