MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – The United States Postal Service continued to hemorrhage money in the last year and is now looking at possibly closing approximately 3,700 post offices nationwide, including three in South Florida.
None of the closures are imminent, but the USPS is considering closing post officers at 1404 E. Las Olas Blvd and at 6759 SW 196th Ave in Fort Lauderdale; and at 22350 Old Dixie Highway in Goulds.
Before any closures can be made, the USPS is set to study what effect the closing would have on the community it serviced; what effect it would have on employees at the facility; compliance with government regulations; and the economic savings to the Postal Service.
No post office on the list will be closed before December 2011. The Postal Service said if all post offices on the list were to close, the USPS would save roughly $200 million annually.
The postal service blamed the increase of customers doing postal business online, on their smart phones, or at a business as the reasons why the closures may be needed.
