Life Sentence For Teen In Boyd Anderson Murder

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) – A Broward teenager was sentenced to life in prison Friday for robbing and killing another teen outside Boyd Anderson High School.

Janard Orange, 18, was convicted last month of first-degree murder for the shooting of 16-year-old Gregory Smith. Smith, a 9th grader at the school, was shot after an April 2009 school event.

Smith and several of his friends were standing outside the school after attending a talent show; they were waiting for ride home.

That's when Orange and three others pulled up in a green Mustang and robbed Smith and his friends at gunpoint.

Witnesses testified during the trial that Smith and the other teens all cooperated with the gunmen and handed over their valuables but one of the robbers, Orange, shot Smith in the chest and killed him. Orange was also only 16 years old at the time.

Smith was a freshman at the high school and played trumpet in the band.
