Hurricane Shutter Scammer In The Slammer

DANIA BEACH (CBS4) – With hurricane season about to begin on June 1, South Floridians need to be careful about purchasing storm shutters. Just ask an elderly Dania Beach woman who was scammed out of more than $2,800, however, the man police say is responsible has been arrested.

Bartlett Roper is charged with grand theft, exploitation of the elderly and other charges.

BSO investigators say he solicited an 83-year-old woman at her house in regards to putting up hurricane shutters on her trailer located on Royal Palm Court in Dania Beach. They made a verbal agreement and the woman wrote a check to Roper in the amount of $2,850.

Deputies say Roper cashed the check minutes later and never returned to do any of the work. The woman even called him 28 times and left messages but he never returned any of her calls.

Roper was already on probation on grand theft and cocaine possession charges.
