Bill Targeting Miami-Dade School Board Passes House
MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) - There could be a fundamental shift in the Miami-Dade School Board if the Florida Senate follows the lead of the Florida House of Representatives.
Monday, the Florida House passed HB 307. The bill, proposed by Representative Ana Rivas Logan, would keep the school board at nine members; but two of the members will now serve on a county-wide, or at-large, basis.
The bill would apply to any county with populations over 2 million.
"This legislation is exactly the type of reform that residents of my district and all across the state have been asking for," said Representative Logan.
The proposal calls for four-year terms of office and staggered terms for members. It would also allow changes in school board member residence areas and provide for publication of those changes.
The bill now heads to the Florida Senate, which already has nearly a full calendar this week, including contentious issues like immigration and the Florida budget.
