Miami Shores Candidate Signs Defaced With Anti-Gay Expressions

MIAMI SHORES - (CBSMiami.com) - Two days before Election Day, a Miami Shores council candidate said some of his campaign signs were vandalized.

Jesse Walters filed a police report Sunday when he was told some of his campaign signs were littered with anti-gay expressions. Walters said some of the signs were on the corner of 96th Street and Northeast Sixth Avenue.

"What happened last night is an aborition and the reaction I've gotten from my neighbors since it happened just kind of restores your faith in humanity and makes you feel good about living in Miami Shores," said Walters.

Walters is asking neighbors and residents to report anything they may have witnessed to Miami Shores Police at (305) 759-2468.

"We're trying to gather as much information as possible to determine who vandalized his political signs," Lt. David McCleod told CBSMiami.com who added that the incident is being investigated as a hate crime. Walters is a stay-at-home dad and has been with his partner for 23 years, according to the candidate biography on the council's website.

Voters in Miami Shores are expected to elect four council members Tuesday, April 12th. There are seven candidates vying for the four seats and the top vote getter is appointed mayor. For a complete candidate list, click here.
